The Building Consent Process in NZ: What to expect
Navigating the building consent process in New Zealand can be overwhelming, especially if you're undertaking a construction or renovation project for the first time. At Draftline, we're here to guide you through every step.
Understanding the Basics
A building consent is a formal approval granted by your local council to carry out building work in line with the Building Code. It ensures the safety, durability, and compliance of your project.
Step-by-Step Process
Design + Documentation: We work with you to develop plans that align with your vision, budget, and council regulations.
Lodgement: Once the documentation is complete, we lodge the building consent application on your behalf.
Council Review & Processing: The council reviews the application to ensure it meets all regulatory requirements. This is the stage where Requests for Information (RFIs) may be issued. RFIs are the council’s way of asking for clarification, additional details, or corrections. It’s a normal part of the process, and we handle these promptly to keep your project moving.
Consent Issued: Once approved, you’ll receive your building consent, then the work can begin!
Inspections & CCC: Throughout construction, inspections are booked with the council. Once completed, you apply for a Code Compliance Certificate (CCC).
